The Power of the Pen (Soaps In Depth 2/27/07)

When Bree Williamson (Jessica) was chosen to co-host a workshop on feminism in the media at last year's National NOW Conference And Young Feminist Summit, she knew exactly what to tell those in attendence: Write in! "Everyone listens to letters," says the actress. "So if fans see something on TV that they don't like, they have to say something about it." And just in case some were skeptical that their comments would be taken seriously, Williamson was there to let them know otherwise. "Producers really do [pay attention] to letters and phone calls," she points out, "which can make or break storylines." Thinking back on that day, the star was jsut happy to have been able to impart such an empowering message to the ladies. "Soap operas aren't exactly what you call 'media,'" she chuckles. "But they are one of the last places for women during the daytime. And female viewers do have such a strong voice, and they need to get their messages out."
