[Niki tries to convince Nash to let her out of the locked bedroom]
Niki: Let's see -- you're a wanderer, you're a loner, you're a guy
with big dreams. All of a sudden this little girlie girl comes into
your life and curls your toes a couple of times, and now you're chasing her
all over the damn country. Close?
Nash: Tess and I are much more than that. You know, I'm sick
and tired of people just writing us off. You don't know Tess and you
don't know what we're about.
Jessica: Antonio, you can't dismiss Nash. Tess has a life.
She has a boyfriend who she loves. Tess is real.
R.J.: (referring to Antonio and Jessica raising Jamie) A
father who plans on raising his child with some psycho, wacko broad who thinks
she's two people --
Nash: You shut the hell up. You will not talk about Tess like
that, not here, not in private, not ever.
[Nash knocks on Jessica's bedroom door and after she tells him to come
in, he opens the door -- she's surprised to see him]
Jessica: Don't -- don't come near me.
Nash: I'm not armed. I just -- I had to see you. Tess
is in there. I miss her.
Jessica: I know, and I'm sorry. But you want her back, and right
now I am fighting as hard as I can to make sure she never comes back again.
Nash: What if Antonio needed your help but you couldn't get to him?
What would you do?
Jessica: I'd risk my life to help Antonio.
Nash: Then you understand exactly how I feel. Everyone thinks
that Tess is just an alter, that she has no right to live. But Tess
is my world. She's -- she's all I've got. She's made me feel
completely differently about everything. It's like I've spent my whole
life waiting for her to come along, and it is torture for me to know that
she is so scared and so lonely and so close. I can't even hug her!
Jessica: I didn't mean to tear you and Tess apart. But I love
Antonio.
Nash: What can I say? I mean, you were there first. Too
bad for Tess.
Jessica: Nash --
Nash: Tess? Is that you?
Jessica: I'm not Tess, so don't call me that.
Nash: I'm sorry, it's just for a moment there you really sounded like
her. I'm not trying to bring her out. It's just I'm worried about
her.
Jessica: Well, Tess is lucky to have you.
Nash: You don't sound too thrilled about that.
[Jessica puts her hands to her stomach]
Jessica: I just felt the baby move.
Nash: You really want this baby, don't you? Yeah, you just look
so ready.
Jessica: Actually, I already, um, had a child, a little girl --
Megan.
Nash: You had a child?
Jessica: I got hit by a car when I was pregnant. She didn't
make it.
Nash: Uh -- I'm sorry.
Jessica: Ever since I lost her, it's been like there's something missing
in my life. That's why this baby is everything that I've ever wanted.
Nash: Could I -- could I just feel it, the baby, please? (he
tries to put his hands on her stomach)
Jessica: No, don't touch me. Listen, I'm sorry that you got
dragged into this mess, but this baby is mine and Antonio's. I have
to believe that. It's the only thing keeping me sane.
Nash: What about all the time that I spent with Tess? Don't
you think that it's more likely that the baby is mine?
Jessica: If it were up to Tess, there wouldn't be a baby. She
tried to get rid of it.
Nash: She's scared. I'm scared. This is a huge deal.
But I'm sure that as soon as she holds my baby in her arms, she's going
to love it with all of her heart. It might be what she needs to make
her whole. I --
Jessica: If that happens, I'll die. That's what you want, isn't
it? If you had to choose, you'd end my life so you could be with
Tess.
Nash: You know, I'm pretty sure that if you actually met her, you'd
like her.
Nash: You know, maybe Tess hasn't been around as long as you, but
she is just as real. This baby is just as real to her! She's
human! All right, she has hopes, she has wishes, she has dreams, just
like you. The only difference is she's more lonely and more scared
because I'm all she's got. I'm the only person who cares that she's
even alive!
Jessica: So doesn't that tell you something?
Nash: She is just as human as you!
Nash: I'm sorry, I shouldn't be here. You need your rest. I'm
going to --
Jessica: No. Thank you for helping me. You could've used
that as an opportunity to get Tess out.
Nash: I am not going to take advantage of you, Jessica. I wish
you would believe that.
Jessica: You're a really nice person, Nash. I'm sorry that we
didn't meet under different circumstances.
[Jessica puts her hands to her stomach]
Nash: Is it the baby again?
Jessica: Yeah.
Jessica: It might be too soon to feel anything, but if you want to
try?
Nash: Yeah.
Jessica: Okay, go ahead.
[Nash puts his hands on her stomach and waits for a moment]
Nash: I can't actually feel anything.
Jessica: Well, maybe it's too tiny to feel from the outside.
Nash: Yeah.
Jessica: I know how much you must miss Tess.
Nash: The worst part is I -- I might never see her again. But
when I'm sleeping, I dream that -- I dream that she's calling for me, but
when I wake up, she's not there. Then I see you. You've got her
hair, her eyes, her lips.
[Nash kisses Jessica, just as Antonio walks in on them]
[Nash realizes that his kiss failed to bring Tess out]
Nash: Jessica, I'm sorry. I just -- I couldn't help myself.
Jessica: Okay. I know. I understand, but don't do it
again.
Nash: Fair enough. But I'm not going anywhere.
Antonio: You've got nothing to stick around for.
Nash: Really? I think I do, because it's not about me, it's
not about Tess and me. There's a baby, a baby who may well be mine.
Antonio: He's not.
Nash: You two were together, what, once? See, Tess and I were
together a lot. You might say that we were having sex all the time.
Good night. (he leaves the room)
Clint: (about Niki) I will tell you one thing -- I am
not going to let her destroy Jessica.
Nash: With all due respect, I'm more worried about what happens to
my Tess.
[Nash arrives on the front step of Llanvair]
Jessica: Nash?
Nash: I still can't stay away. I don't supposed there's any
chance you're Tess?
Jessica: No.
Nash: Could I come in anyway?
Nash: (to Clint) I promised I wouldn't run away with Tess.
I never agreed to abandon her.
[Nash finds out that there's been a fire at his winery]
Nash: (to Antonio) I'll tell you what. I may well
have to go to California today to take care of this business, because it's
the most important thing to me, to Tess. It's what we got together.
It's our future. But as soon as that's done, I'm coming back
to get her.
[Nash finds Bruce waiting for him back at the winery]
Bruce: Nash is back.
Nash: What do you want, Bruce?
Bruce: Where is the hot blonde?
Nash: I'm not talking to you about Tess.
[Bruce suggests that Nash sell the winery to raise some much needed
cash]
Bruce: You and your girlfriend didn't do such a bad job with the place
-- should get a decent price for it.
Nash: You can't put a decent price on a dream, Brucie.
Bruce: Ah, you always wake up anyway.
Nash: I guess there will be other dreams, huh?
Bruce: Oh. I'll take that as a yes? You'll sell?
Nash: I'll do whatever I have to for Tess.
[Nash reluctantly places an ad in the paper to sell Esprit Libre]
Nash: The advertisement should read "vineyard with attached cottage.
Lots of touches from a happy couple." Thank you. (he
hangs up the phone and mutters to himself) If there was any other
way, Tess --
[Dr. Fox has hypnotized Jessica for a therapy session]
Dr. Fox: I want to talk to the woman who calls herself Tess. Please
allow Tess to come forward now.
[Tess wakes up and looks around]
Tess: Nash.
[Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Nash is in the cottage waking
up from a dream]
Nash: Tess. Tess? Tess, do you need me?
Dr. Fox: You're not in control here, and you can't make demands.
Tess: Oh, I'm not demanding anything. I'm just telling you the
truth. Unless I get to speak to Nash, I'm not going to say a word,
and you know I got the willpower to back it up.
[Tess is allowed to call Nash on the phone]
Tess: Nash, hey. Are you there? Is that really you?
Nash: Yeah. Yeah, it's me. I miss you, baby. It's
so good to hear your voice.
Tess: Baby, I miss you, too. I miss you so much that it hurts.
[Nash has informed Tess of the fire at Esprit Libre]
Tess: There was a fire? Nobody told me that.
Nash: Well, the caretaker made it sound like a much bigger deal than
it was. It's the only reason I left Llanview.
Tess: Well, how bad was it?
Nash: Well, it's the -- the de-stemmer, but it's nothing near what
I imagined it to be when I was flying over here. It's all under
control.
Tess: Is the cottage okay?
Nash: It's fine. It's fine. It's -- it's a little cold.
I had to light a fire last night.
Tess: Oh, I wish I was sitting there by the fire with you.
Nash: Yeah, me, too. Hey, and you will be. I promise.
How are you? How's the baby?
Tess: Fine, I guess.
Nash: Antonio's there, isn't he? He's listening in?
Tess: Yeah, Antonio's always here. But I belong to you, baby,
only you, body and soul.
Tess: (to Antonio and the Buchanans) Nash is on his way
back from California, and I am not budging until he gets here. I mean,
that should make you guys all happy, right? You wanted to keep me locked
up here anyway.
[After Nash is beat up by Mr. Reston's thugs, he lays unconcious in the
hospital, where he dreams of his happy life with Tess at the winery]
Nash: Tess? Great news! Just talked to some of the guys
in the field. They said it's been a perfect growing season, should
be an amazing crop. Honey, I'm home.
[Tess comes out of the back room all dressed up and Nash is in
awe]
Nash: You look -- you look -- how do you do it? Every time I
see you, you just look more beautiful.
Tess: I also made you dinner.
Nash: You?
Tess: Yeah. There's a salad in the fridge. There are some
steaks on the fire pit out back, and look, I didn't even burn down the cottage.
But don't get used to it, buddy.
Nash: Oh, it's too late. Whew. I already am.
Tess: Yeah, me, too. I love you.
[They kiss]
Nash: I love you. You're my whole world
Jessica: (to Antonio) Nash isn't just going to let go
of Tess. We need to find some way to make peace with him.
Jessica: So, did Tess tell you anything new? Any -- anything
that would help us?
Antonio: No, she just wanted to talk about Nash. (seeing
the look on Jessica's face) What?
Jessica: Well, Tess in love -- I mean, who would've thought? Not
me, that's for sure.
Jessica: (to Antonio) Nash scares me, scares me because
of what he means to Tess.
[The nurse doesn't want to let Nash use his cell phone to call
Tess]
Nash: Look, Tess needs me, okay? She doesn't know where I am.
For heaven's sakes, it's -- it's Christmas!
Nurse: You had to play the Christmas card. One call. And
if you don't calm down, I'm going to take it back.
Nash: All right. You're a big toughie.
[The nurse leaves the room and Nash prepares to call Tess]
Nash: One way or another, I am going to be with you at Christmas,
Tess.
[The phone rings at Llanfair and Jessica picks it up]
Jessica: Hello.
Nash: Tess? Oh, you picked up! I've left, like, a million
messages.
Jessica: Nash?
Nash: (with resigned realization) Jessica.
Nash: Look, I don't know how this works. I don't know if Tess
can hear me or if you can tell her what I said.
Jessica: Nash, I --
Nash: I told her I was coming, but something happened, and I'm in
the hospital.
Jessica: What?
Nash: Look, it's okay. She's got to know that I didn't abandon
her. I do love her, and I would do anything to be with her.
[Jessica holds her head in pain and the cell phone drops to the
floor]
Nash: Jessica? Jessica, are you there? Tess?
[Tess takes control back and looks at herself in the mirror]
Tess: He does love me.
[When Nash wakes up, Tess is cuddled up next to him in the hospital
bed]
Nash: I thought I was dreaming.
[Tess kisses Nash lightly on the lips]
Tess: That real enough for you?
Nash: Can't believe the nurses let you stay here all night.
Tess: Well, I think I scared them. I said that if they didn't
let me see you you'd die on Christmas and that Santa would put really nasty
stuff in their stockings.
Nash: You weren't lying. I was dying without you.
Nash: Let's assume that the baby is ours, but what then?
Tess: What do you mean?
Nash: You weren't exactly happy when you first found out. You
wanted to get rid of it.
Tess: Well, it's getting a little late now, don't you think?
Nash: So you're okay? You're happy to have him?
Tess: Or her.
Nash: So you think it's a girl?
Tess: Whatever this baby is, it's going to have one really screwed-up
mother.
Nash: Oh, don't say that. Don't call yourself screwed up.
Tess: I'm 1/2 of a split personality. What the hell would you
call it?
Nash: Well, I would call you amazing and incredible and the best thing
that ever happened to me, and that's what you'll be with this baby.
Tess: How, Nash? How? I drink. I smoke. I'm
a complete flake. I'm probably going to leave the baby at home or forget
it at a bar.
Nash: You won't do that.
Tess: How do you know?
Nash: Because you will love this baby as much as we love each other.
Tess: I don't even know what to do with a baby.
Nash: You think I do? We'll get a book, we'll read all the books,
and what we can't figure out we'll make up as we go along.
Tess: Well, when you say it like that, it almost sounds ok.
Nash: It'll be even better than that. It'll be amazing. It'll
be the best thing that ever happened to us.
Nash: I was at a bar. I had a little bit too much merlot and
got into it with a bunch of the lowlifes there.
Tess: A bar? Really? Where?
Nash: What difference does it make?
Tess: You are so lying.
Nash: What makes you think I'm lying?
Tess: Well, merlot in a biker bar?
Nash: It's wine country.
Tess: Anybody that orders merlot in a dive deserves to get beaten
up. So either you tell me the truth or I'll pound you myself.
Nash: You remember back in New York we were talking that both of us
had done things that we regretted?
Tess: I remember.
Nash: It's kind of why I got beat up.
Tess: What'd you do?
Nash: I hurt somebody. I hurt somebody I shouldn't have, and
I kind of --
[At that moment Antonio enters and Nash doesn't get a chance to finish
his story]
[Jessica takes control back and sees Nash laying in the hospital
bed]
Jessica: Nash. Oh, my -- oh, my God, are you all right?
Nash: Oh, I'm fine. At least I was until Tess left.
Antonio: Jess and I already discussed it. We're going to raise
this baby together.
Nash: Whoa. The hell you will. If that baby is mine, I
got more of a right to it than you or Jessica, I'm sorry.
Jessica: Nash, are you going to be okay?
Nash: I miss Tess.
[Jessica and Antonio leave the hospital room and Nash calls out after
them]
Nash: It's all right, walk. Go on. But I won't give up
on her. I never will!
Jessica: Nash, I'm sorry that we barged in on you.
Nash: You don't have to apologize for anything. Not ever.
Jessica: He's not going to give up on her, Antonio. Nash loves
Tess, and he's not going to stop till he's with her.
[Jessica is talking to the baby inside her when Nash approaches]
Jessica: Don't worry, I'm not going to let anybody take us away from
your daddy.
Nash: Even if the daddy is me?
Nash: That baby may be making you stronger, but it does not mean that
I am not --
Jessica: Don't say it. I already know.
Nash: Well, I need you to know something else. I never tried
to get Tess to get rid of the baby. I did say some unfortunate things
about not wanting a family. Look, I found the pregnancy test box in
the garbage. When she told me that she wasn't pregnant, I -- I acted
relieved. But it was just a gut reaction. I come from a pretty
-- pretty screwed-up upbringing. But once I found out that she was, I felt
differently. I felt happy. I started to be able to see our future together
as a family.
Jessica: Nash, I'm sorry, I -- I really am sorry that you got messed
up in this whole thing, but you have to understand that Antonio and I are
going to raise this baby.
Nash: Not if that's my child, you won't. There's no way in hell that
I'm letting anyone else bring up my kid.
Jessica: I can't believe that you want to bring the law into this.
Antonio just got -- he just got through with one custody battle. How can
I put him through another one?
Nash: Well, Antonio should be worrying about his child. I am going
to worry about mine.
Jessica: Nash, this baby is the whole world to me, and if Tess comes
out again --
Nash: If Tess comes out again? Don't you mean "when?"
Jessica: Is that what you're waiting for?
Nash: Of course it is.
Jessica: Well, how can you live like this, waiting for a moment here
and there for Tess to take control? How can that be satisfying for you?
Nash: None of this is in the least bit satisfying for me. But I'm
not going to stop fighting for Tess. I love Tess more than I have loved any
other woman, ever. I owe it to Tess and I owe it to myself.
[Nash gets on his cell phone]
Nash: I need a ticket to Llanview, Pennsylvania. No, one-way.
Yes, I know that it's New Year's Eve. I don't care what it costs.
I got to be there by midnight.
[Niki wants to strike a deal with Nash...if he helps her stay out, she'll
get him Tess]
Nash: Look, I would do anything to be with Tess, but Tess is sick.
She needs her real mom if she's going to get well. Thank you,
but no, thank you.
Niki: Hey, you don't tell nobody you saw me, you got it?
Nash: I'm done making promises.
[After wandering the grounds of Llanfair during a snowstorm, Nash and
Tess find one another and hug tightly]
Nash: I'm never going to let you go.
Tess: I'm never going to let you go.
[Nash and Tess take refuge in an abandoned cottage]
Tess: I can't let you go. I can't let Jessica come back out
again.
Nash: Tess --
Tess: I don't care what you promised her, Nash. This is too
hard. It's wrong.
Nash: I agree.
Tess: Okay. Okay, so what do we do? I know that -- that
we got to get me away from -- as far away from her family as possible, because
they're not going to quit till they get rid of me.
Nash: All right, you know what? Don't worry about that, not
tonight. Tonight it's just the two of us. All right? I
just want to be close to you. I want to make love to you. I want
to forget about everybody and everything else. It's just the two of
us, okay?
Tess: But --
Nash: No, shh. Tomorrow. We'll face whatever and whoever
we have to tomorrow. Just -- tonight. Tess, I love you more than
I've ever loved anybody. You're the only person I've ever really
loved.
[Nash and Tess get a room at the Bayberry Inn -- they settle down onto
the bed]
Nash: You're all I've ever wanted.
Tess: You, too. I never thought I could have this.
[After making love, Tess and Nash look at the clock on the night table
and see it's struck midnight]
Nash: Happy New Year.
Tess: Happy New Year.
[Nash brings Tess breakfast in bed]
Nash: I got everything you need. I got decaf coffee, I got eggs, bacon,
on an English muffin. Use your imagination. It's like eggs benedict.
Ooh.
Tess: I don't have to use my imagination. It's perfect.
[Tess expresses concern that Nash might not be feeling well after getting
beat up just days ago]
Nash: I am fully recuperated and ready to dedicate the rest of my
days to taking care of the mother of my child.
Tess: (poking in one of the bags that Nash brought) What
is this?
Nash: Books. I got books. I got books on baby names, I
got books on baby's first year, I got books on pregnancy -- everything we
need to prepare ourself for parenthood.
[Tess is worried that the bay might be Antonio's]
Nash: I know Antonio's put a scare into you, but --
Tess: Do you know that he used to be a cop?
Nash: I don't care what he used to be, but this baby is ours.
Tess: I've learned a lot about living since being with you, but I
just feel like I -- I have so much more to learn. And then I wake up
one day and I'm pregnant, and then, boom, fast-forward and I'm five months
pregnant and Antonio wants the baby. It just feels like -- it feels
like I never get a chance to get used to anything.
Nash: You're worried about bringing up this baby.
Tess: Yes, I am very, very worried. You know, women usually
have nine months to sort this stuff out, and Jessica -- Jessica did all that.
I just -- I just feel like maybe she'd be a better mother than me.
Nash: No. No, no, no. You listen to me. All that worrying
and thinking and planning that you're talking about, I've been doing that.
Okay? We're going to read these books. We'll figure out
how to bring up our baby, together. Antonio just wants to put his stamp
on this kid and then he's going to go back to running that nightclub of his.
But we're going to bring up our baby, together forever. That
is the best thing for this baby.
Tess: I just feel like I've always reacted to Jessica's life and never
really had anything of my won, not even a hamster.
Nash: Well, you've had me. We can do this together. We
can do anything together.
Tess: When I'm with you, I feel like everything's going to be okay.
Nash: It is.
[Nash looks through one of the baby books he bought]
Nash: According to this book, in your second trimester you should
start feeling pretty great. That's where you're at right now, second
trimester.
Tess: You read this already?
Nash: Well, you know, I had to kill a little time while the guy was
getting all this stuff ready, so -- want to know what else it says?
Tess: I don't know.
Nash: (kissing Tess's neck) It says that in your second
trimester, you should start feeling really, really horny.
Tess: Really?
Nash: Really.
Tess: (in amused disbelief) Again?
Nash: Well, you know, it's like you said, you know, we got so much
time to make up for.
[Tess questions Nash about why he was beat up by the thugs in
Napa]
Tess: Nash, listen, you take care of me and you know all my problems.
I just feel like it should be a two-way street.
Nash: I was a different person before I met you.
Tess: Well, you're not going to get any flak from Miss Two-For-One
personality.
Nash: Don't even joke about that, okay?
Tess: Well, what are we supposed to do about it?
Tess: Who did you used to be?
Nash: Someone I didn't want to be. But I like who I am with
you.
Tess: Well, you're kind of veering away from the whole getting beat-down
subject.
Nash: Yeah.
Tess: This person that did this to you -- are they going to try to
do it again?
Nash: I don't think so. I think it's done.
Tess: Well, that's all I need to know.
Nash: Good.
Nash: (taking a bite of some of the food he bought) You know
what would make this taste better?
Tess: What?
Nash: Not tasting terrible.
Tess: Oh, you tried.
Nash: Oh, you kidding me? I failed! My very first mission and I
failed.
Tess: No, you didn't. You did what nobody else could do. You made
me feel safe. You made me feel like you and I are going to be together forever.
And nothing, nobody can get in the way.
Nash: You're worried about Antonio busting in.
Tess: Yes, I am. I mean, that's what he always does. He comes busting
in, and then he babbles on about this great love that he has for Jessica
to make her come out, and it's sick.
Nash: Yeah, well, I'm here now, so if he wants Jessica back, he's
going to have to fight his way through me, all right?
Tess: I know the odds are in our favor, but Jessica always wins. Even
when I think that I can just be me, she always swoops in and takes over.
Nash: That's why we're going to do this test.
Tess: Because you want me to disappear?
Nash: No, I don't want you to disappear. I want you full-time, not
just when Jessica's weak or Antonio's not around.
[Nash questions Tess about what happened in her childhood that caused
the DID]
Nash: Tell me, Tess, what is it that Jessica couldn't handle?
Tess: Why do you keep pushing me on this?
Nash: Because I love you. Because I love you, and somebody hurt you,
and I want to know who.
Tess: Well, somebody hurt you and you're not telling me what
happened.
Nash: Okay, stop trying to turn it around. This is important. If you
could just tell me what it is that happened, so many questions would be
answered.
Tess: Because it'll just be the beginning of more problems.
Nash: No, it won't. That's what you thought when you were keeping
all that split personality stuff from me. You thought I'd stop loving you,
but I didn't. I still love you. And I will. All right, you can tell me anything.
You don't have to be afraid.
Nash: Look, you know I love you, right?
Tess: Yes, I love you, too, so much.
Nash: Okay, good. Well, when there's a love thing, there's supposed
to be a trust thing. You know, like -- like when you close your eyes and
fall backwards and you trust the person to catch you. I'll catch you, all
right? Whatever it is, whatever you did, whatever was done to you, I'll catch
you.
Tess: Well, you make it sound so easy.
Nash: No, it's not, I know that, but you can do it. It'll make you
feel better.
Tess: I have had this secret my whole, entire life. I have never told
a soul. Jessica doesn't know what it is, and she lives inside my head. If
I can't tell her, how am I supposed to tell you?
Nash: Because I'm the one who doesn't want you to disappear.
Tess: That's exactly it. I can't say this out loud. The second Jessica
knows, then she won't need me anymore, and I'll be over.
Nash: No, you're never going to be over as long as I'm here.
Tess: Jessica's sweet and she's perfect and -- I drink, and I smoke,
and I sleep around, and --
Nash: Not anymore. Not since you met me, have you?
Tess: Nash, I have not been with anybody else since I barged into
your apartment in New York. I swear it. You believe me, right?
Nash: Yeah, I do. I know it.
Tess: That doesn't change who I am. I'm still rude and selfish and
nasty and --
Nash: Wonderful. I wouldn't change you if I could. And I sure as hell
wouldn't choose Jessica over you.
Tess: You're twisted.
Nash: Hmm. Then we're twisted together. But we work. We work
together.
Tess: Yes, when we're together.
Nash: Well, I'm never letting you go, no matter what.
[Antonio knocks on the door of Nash and Tess's room at the Bayberry
Inn]
Antonio: I know you guys are in there, so why don't you just make
it easy on all of us and open the door?
Tess: What are we going to do?
Nash: What we always do. We're going to let him in.
Tess: Antonio, tell me -- how do you do it? I mean, you stalk us from
one coast all the way to the other, then all over Llanview and then you show
up here with this ridiculous, pathetic story about how Nash has a restraining
order against him and you expect us to believe it?
Nash: He's not lying, Tess.
Tess: What?
Nash: About the restraining order. It's not a story. It's true.
Antonio: Jessica, if you're in there, please, talk to me.
Tess: Back the hell off, Antonio, right now.
Antonio: I want to talk to Jessica.
Tess: Well, too bad, because she doesn't want to come out, okay? You
know, you're going to have to get this at some point. This is my life, this
is my boyfriend, and this is my baby, okay? And nothing you can say or do
is going to make me disappear. I'm good and pissed, Antonio, and I am never
as strong as when I am good and pissed. So you get the hell out of here or
I'm going to call the cops.
[Antonio leaves the room and Tess confronts Nash about the restraining
order]
Tess: So you do have a restraining order out against you?
Nash: Yep.
Tess: And you're not going to tell me about it?
Nash: Nope. It has nothing to do about how I feel about you or about
us or our life together.
Tess: Okay. Well, then, I'm confused, because right before Antonio
walked in, you said we couldn't get over our problems unless I told you the
truth about things. You wanted me to tell you the scariest thing that has
ever happened to me, a secret that other people are trying to use to destroy
me. And -- and now you're not going to tell me the truth?
Nash: There's nothing you need to know about it.
Tess: Like hell there isn't.
Tess: Nash, guys don't get restraining orders to keep away other
guys.
Nash: Yeah.
Tess: Who is she?
Nash: Tess, don't do this. This isn't good for you or our
baby.
Tess: Don't -- do that. Do you think that it's good for us to
know that there's a woman out there that is so afraid of you that she had
to get police protection to keep you 500 feet away from her?
Nash: You are blowing this way out of proportion.
Tess: Okay. Then explain it to me.
Tess: (about the restraining order) So, we're just going
to let Antonio sit outside and drool over this information?
Nash: Let him.
Tess: Do you know what just happened right now? Do you understand
what just happened? Antonio came in, and I kept Jessica from coming out.
We're winning! Why are you choosing now to be secretive?
Nash: It happened before I met you. It doesn't matter. It
was before you. What matters is our baby and us!
[Tess wants Antonio to take her back to Llanfair]
Nash: Please don't do this. We are so close. What about
all the decisions we made, about the paternity test, about the baby? Come
on.
Tess: Consider them unmade. It doesn't mean anything anymore.
I'm tired. I'm too tired to fight with you guys anymore.
Nash: Tess -- Tess, don't go.
Tess: Do you remember last summer in New York when we fell in love?
Nash: I will never forget that.
Tess: Yeah. Well, we were idiots. Because we both should
have known that our past would catch up to us and ruin it.
[Tess turns and leaves the inn with Antonio following behind her]
[Nash runs into Clint at the Palace hotel]
Nash: Tess is going to find out about me.
Clint: What do you mean?
Nash: Well, she's going to find out what kind of a guy I am -- you
all are -- and then it will be over.
[Nash explains a little of his past with Claudia Reston to Clint]
Nash: I never really understood how much I hurt Claudia until I fell
in love with Tess.
Clint: Well, you're involved with my daughter now. And you've been
very fair so far, considering the circumstances. But if you hurt her, I will
not be quite so understanding as whoever did this to you.
Nash: Sir, I do not want to hurt her.
Clint: Okay.
[Nash arrives at Llanfair]
Tess: What do you want?
Nash: I want to be with you for the amnio.
Tess: Well, I don't need or want you there.
Nash: Tess -- don't push me away.
Tess: Tell me why I shouldn't. Because your last girlfriend had to
push you so hard that she got a restraining order against you?
Nash: Now is not the time to get into all this.
Tess: Well, when would be a good time? Or should I make an appointment?
Do you have a calendar with you?
Nash: Look, let's go for this test, prove that I'm the daddy, that
the baby's ours, and we'll clear all this up, and then we'll start making
plans for our future, Tess.
Tess: Is that all you have in your bag of tricks, stall tactics? Get
out of my way.
Nash: I don't want to lose you, Tess.
Tess: Well, you sure as hell are not going to keep me unless you tell
me what happened.
Nash: That's what I'm afraid of. I might lose you either way.
Tess: Well, that's a risk you're going to have to take. What was the
first thing that you remember when you met me?
Nash: Besides you stealing my car?
Tess: Exactly. I like to take risks.
Nash: It's part of what first attracted me to you.
Tess: Then why would you think that I wouldn't want to take a risk
now? What could be so bad that it would make me say, "I don't want to take
that risk?"
Nash: Fine, you want to play that game? Why don't you tell me what
it is that first turned you into Tess?
Tess: I didn't "turn" into Tess. I've never been anybody else. I --
I thought you were the only person that understood that.
Nash: All right, I won't push it. I'll take a leap. I know that you'll
tell me when you're ready. All I'm asking is that you take that same leap
with me.
Nash: You can glare at me all you want, but your eyes can't lie. You
love me. And you can tell by my eyes that I love you more than anything.
But it's time to let everyone know that Tess is real. And there's nothing
more real than a baby, all right? Because if this baby is mine, then it's
Tess', and then everyone in this house, in this town, the whole damn world
can say, "Look, that's Tess and she's not the figment of someone's imagination,
she's real."
Tess: You're not off the hook.
[Tess is about to go in to have the amnio]
Nash: Tess?
Tess: Yeah, I know. You're not going to go anywhere.
[The nurse brings a picture of the sonogram to show Nash and
Antonio]
Nurse: We've done a sonogram. Looks very good for this stage
of the pregnancy. We thought the father might like to see the first
picture of his baby.
Antonio: You know once we get the paternity test, you'll be out of
here. And out of Jessica's life.
Nash: I'm not in Jessica's life. I never have
been.
[Nash and Antonio are waiting in the hallway]
Doctor: I'll send your boyfriend in now.
Tess: Huh. Yeah, good luck with that one.
Tess: (to Clint) We're still playing "Who's the daddy?" here,
and then once we find out, yeah, that's when the fun's really going to
start.
Nash: I know my timing is screwed up. But after you left the
hospital, I took a look at the picture of that baby inside you and I realized
that if I had even a prayer of being a decent father, then I got to put my
past behind me. And I need you to forgive me, because if you can do
that, then I have a chance at a fresh start at being a better person, at
being a good dad -- like your dad. Tess, I want you back in my life.
And if that means telling you what happened with Claudia Reston, then
I'll do it -- if you'll let me.
Tess: Fine. Start from the beginning, and don't even think about
leaving anything out.
Tess: Start talking, and then you can get your ass out of here.
Nash: I met Claudia Reston when I was out clubbing one night, upper
east side. She was all lit up, in a real party mood. The next
thing I knew, I was in the back of her limo drinking $300 bottles of champagne.
That's how she spent money -- like it didn't even matter, and you know
what? I figured, "Hey, she wants to throw a little bit my way, who am I to
say no?"
Tess: So you hooked up with her for loads of sex and even more money
-- is that it?
Nash: Yeah, something like that. We only dated for about six
months. It was nothing serious. I didn't even really like her
most of the time. She was a spoiled little rich brat who needed some
serious life lessons, and I needed the cash, so I figured, "you know what?"
I took her for a ride, a very long and expensive ride. I just
-- I had no idea how much it would actually cost her.
Tess: Did you hit her?
Nash: No. No, of course not. How could you even ask me
that?
Tess: Well, then what was the restraining order about, then?
Nash: I didn't hit her, but what happened to her in the end was worse
-- a lot worse.
Nash: I don't want you to think that what we have is anything like
what I had with Claudia Reston.
Tess: Why? Because she's loaded and so am I?
Nash: I didn't know that when I met you. Come on, you -- you
stole my car, you stole my wallet. You were living on the streets when
I took you in.
Tess: So what happened with this Claudia person?
Nash: Well, you know about my dream -- the vineyard, the winery,
California. The Restons are a wine family. They go back generations.
I learned a lot from her father about how the business works and --
Tess: And what antique French oak barrels to buy?
Nash: Yeah.
Nash: (to Tess, Antonio and the Buchanans) I want you
to know that I was a different person before. I had no idea what it
meant to love somebody so badly that it would kill you if you couldn't be
with them anymore.
Nash: (to Tess) I didn't want it to look like I was doing
the same thing to you, and I'm not. I swear. I hated what I did.
I hated myself for doing it. But then I met you. It was
like the universe was giving me a second chance. I never loved Claudia.
I never told her that I loved her. It's just -- it got out of
control. I can't expect you to take me back. I can't expect you
to forgive me. But if you will, Tess, I swear to you I will never hurt
you. I will love you and I will take care of you and I will take care
of that baby forever. I swear it. If you'll let me.
Nash: Do you believe me, Tess? I love you. I won't hurt
you.
[Tess and Nash embrace]
Tess: I'm sorry.
Nash: You have nothing to be sorry for. Thank you.
[Tess tries on Natalie's wedding dress]
Tess: "I, Tess, take you, Nash --"
Natalie: Your boyfriend is a hustler and now everyone knows it --
except apparently you, unless you're just too proud to admit it.
Tess: Jessica is the heiress here, okay, not me. Nash is not with
me for my money, okay? He took me in when he thought I had nothing,
and I stole from him. And he saw the good in me anyway.
Natalie: You really love that guy, don't you?
Tess: Yeah. So what?
Antonio: You know, it doesn't matter what the test results are.
Jessica and I have decided to raise that baby as our own.
Nash: Oh. Well, that may not be up to you. You want to
make this more interesting?
Antonio: How so?
Nash: Winner takes all -- the baby, the girl -- and the loser takes
a long, lonely hike home.
Antonio: You'd really use a game of pool to decide who gets Jessica
and the baby?
Nash: No, of course I wouldn't. But I'm just trying to show
you how absurd this is. We're fighting over this like somehow it's
up to us, but at the end of the day it's not. It's up to Tess.
Antonio: Except there's only one problem.
Nash: Hmm?
Antonio: At the end of all this, there will no longer be any Tess.
Nash: Wishful thinking. Doesn't make it so. You see, Tess is a lot
stronger than you think.
Nash: She's not upstairs, the staff hasn't seen her.
Antonio: Well, how is that possible? Security said she never left.
Nash: Yeah, well, getting out of impossible situations is Tess'
specialty.
Tess: You guys looked mighty cozy right before I walked in.
Nash: Yes.
Tess: Real sweet.
Nash: (to Tess) Hey, if there's one thing we've proven
to him and the Buchanan family, it's that we can overcome anything.
Nash: You hungry? We could, you know, go out and grab
something.
Tess: And I suppose I'm paying?
Nash: That's not funny.
Tess: It was a little bit funny.
Claudia: Why should I believe anything you say?
Tess: Because I'll tell you something about myself first. I'm
in love with Nash Brennan.
Nash: (to Cristian and Natalie) I know Tess can take
care of herself and she wouldn't do anything to endanger the baby, but I
would feel a heck of a lot better if I knew where she was.
Nash: Somebody snuck into the hospital and destroyed the sample.
Cristian: Jessica would never do something like that.
Nash: Yeah, right.
Natalie: Huh -- yeah, right because Jessica is civilized.
Nash: Tess is scared, Jess feels safe. You see, Tess thinks
that everybody in this town is against her, and she's right. I kept
telling her not to worry, that I'm the father of the baby, but Tess was
terrified.
Tess: I'm sorry, did I say something funny?
Claudia: You really think I bought that whole "I want to protect Nash"
routine?
Tess: Why else would I be here?
Claudia: To see for yourself what kind of woman Nash leaves. You're
another pretty, lost rich girl, and you're desperate to prove to yourself
that you're more than his next mark.
Tess: Are you trying to tick me off?
Claudia: I know you, princess. I am you. So take a good, long look.
Tess: Look, we may have a lot of things in common, but there's one
thing we don't have in common. I might be a bitch sometimes, and I
have totally screwed up. But the one thing that I don't do -- I don't
feel sorry for myself.
Claudia: Bully for you.
Tess: You had bad things happen to you. You're not the only
one. Nash and I have been through hell and back. And we don't whine
and cry and moan about it and have big freak outs. No, we're just trying
to plan a good life for our kid.
Claudia: Your kid?
Tess: I got to go.
Claudia: You're pregnant, aren't you? You're having his baby, aren't
you? Aren't you?
[Claudia pulls open Tess's coat to get a look at her stomach -- she reels
back in shock]
Claudia: No. No. I was supposed to have his baby. He
promised me. Do you know how much I hate you? You have my life.
You took what was mine.
Tess: I don't care if you hate me.
Claudia: Shut up. I don't want you to feel sorry for me.
Tess: Look, I know that it looks like I have it all, but the truth
is, Nash and I might never be able to raise this child together.
[Jessica takes control back from Tess]
Jessica: How'd the procedure go?
Nash: Great. We saw a picture of the baby.
Jessica: Oh, you did?
Nash: Yeah. It's beautiful. Just like its mother.
Claudia: I thought about doing that myself -- getting pregnant just
so you wouldn't leave me -- but, I don't know, that seemed pathetic. I
mean, there's desperate, and then there's desperate.
Nash: It's not like that with Tess and I. Claudia, I love her.
Nash: I wasn't always the person I am now, Jessica.
Jessica: Well. That makes two of us. Why are you looking
at me like that?
Nash: "That makes two of us." That's what Tess said. Huh.
Nash: You know, you know a lot more about this D.I.D. thing than I
do. Is it possible that -- that Tess believed everything that Claudia
was saying and then let Jessica come out just so she could get away from
me?
Clint: Just because Jessica has come back, that does not mean that
Tess has given up on you.
Nash: Oh, but you didn't hear what Claudia had to say about me or
see how Tess reacted.
Clint: Yeah, I know that. I -- I know what you're going through, though.
You know, there are reasons why Viki's alters kept coming and going
-- a lot of reasons, and all of them complicated.
Nash: So -- so you think there's still a chance Tess might come
back?
Clint: If you're asking me if this is over -- no, not even close.
Viki: You know, my guess is that Tess is frightened that the baby
is not Nash's, and that's why she destroyed the sample. Or she knows
something that we don't know.
Jessica: Mom, thanks for trying. But knowing Tess, she was probably
just angry at Nash, and she panicked over losing him.
Jessica: I'm trying to make myself an omelet and there's this pan
I like to use and I can't seem to find it.
Nash: You cook?
Jessica: Tess didn't?
Nash: No. She burns toast.
Jessica: So you'd do all the cooking when you guys lived together
in Napa?
Nash: She -- she barbecued once. (smiling at the memory)
Oh, the barbecue incident.
Jessica: She set it on fire?
Nash: Ah, she got the hang of it after a while. First time,
though, she torched the place -- yeah. Luckily, there was some shrimp in
the fridge and fresh basil out in the garden, so I whipped up some scampi
al pesto.
Jessica: Oh, man. You're making me hungry -- which I am all
the time, anyway.
Nash: Well, how do you like your eggs?
Jessica: You want to cook me an omelet?
Nash: If you'll let me, yeah.
Jessica: I like mushrooms and cheddar.
Nash: You're on.
Viki: (to Todd) Once this baby's born, if Nash turns
out to be the father, oh, my God, we are going to have one enormous fight
on our hands.
[Jessica looks at the omelet Nash made for her]
Jessica: Oh, my gosh. It looks wonderful. It looks like
something that came out of a magazine, and it's enough to feed a family of
four.
Nash: Well, you kind of are -- a family of three anyway. Huh.
Jessica: (taking a bite of the omelet) Mmm, mmm. Oh,
my goodness. It's as good as it looks -- it's better.
Nash: Mmm. Well, and if that wasn't coming from a starving pregnant
woman, I'd actually be flattered.
Jessica: Did Tess like this?
Nash: Which? My cooking or my omelets?
Jessica: Both.
Nash: She's actually kind of picky.
Jessica: Hmm. Man, please don't tell me she ate things like
eel and blowfish.
Nash: No. She's more of a meat and potatoes kind of girl --
not quite tartar, but definitely bloody.
Jessica: Just like my grandfather, Asa.
Nash: Really?
Jessica: Mm-hmm.
Nash: She must have a little more Buchanan in her than she likes to
own up to.
Jessica: What a waste of your good cooking skills.
Nash: Hmm. Well, she came around eventually. I started
trying new things. I had no idea what was going on. I was actually
watching a whole new personality form. I thought she was just opening
up, discovering --
Jessica: Discovering what? I want to know.
Nash: Life and me in it. It is the most incredible thing to
watch someone fall in love with you who you're totally into.
Nash: I'm sorry if it bothers you hearing about Tess.
Jessica: No. I asked. And I -- I want to know. I
-- it's just hearing, you know, a nice guy like you talk about someone who's
me but isn't me -- you guys have been together. You have this entire
life that I know nothing about and it's just confusing.
Nash: You think it's confusing for you? I had a buddy who dated
an identical twin. He said that whenever he was around her sister,
it just completely weirded him out. I mean, she looked exactly like
the woman he was in love with, only she was a different person, though, with
us. Well --
Jessica: I'm the same person. But I'm not.
Nash: Hey. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you.
Jessica: No, it's -- it's been happening a lot lately.
Nash: Yeah. Well, I hear it can happen when one is pregnant.
Jessica: I just -- I hate it. I hate being a crybaby.
Nash: You and Tess both. You're a lot more like her than you
think.
Jessica: I have to go. I have to see someone. I've been
putting it off for long enough.
Nash: So you all right?
Jessica: Yeah, fine. I just got to stop feeling sorry for myself.
I'm not the only one in the world with problems. Thanks for the
omelet.
Nash: Mrs. Davidson, can I ask you a personal question? This
Niki Smith character -- do you ever feel her? I mean, when you're not
her? When she's not out? When you're not -- integrated?
Viki: Look, Nash, the whole purpose of integration is to negate the
separateness of the alter's existence and to fuse it to the dominant personality.
So no, I do not feel Niki Smith. Well, I did not until recently,
but that's only because I've just realized that I am not yet fully
integrated.
Nash: Ok, but when you do, what do you feel? I mean, do you
act more like her? Do you hear her voice in your head?
Viki: Ok, I know what you're asking. You want to know if when
Jessica is integrated, will there be enough of Tess left in her to still
love you, hmm?
Nash: One can't help hoping, yeah.
Viki: Yes, well, I'm afraid I can't help hoping the exact opposite.
I'm sorry -- I want Jessica back. And that means doing away with
Tess and everything that has to do with Tess. Now, I know that's not
what you want to hear, but you're going to have to accept it because it is
inevitable. You have to let go of Tess. And you have to stop
dreaming about something that will never, ever be. And now I would
suggest that you let yourself out.
Jessica: I'm sorry.
Nash: What do you have to be sorry for?
Jessica: I'm sorry because me being here means that you can't be with
the person you love.
Nash: Jessica was upset about her uncle Todd's conviction. She
broke down. I comforted her. And Mrs. Davidson came in to find
me with my arms around Jessica.
Clint: And Viki jumped to conclusions?
Nash: She accused me of having ulterior motives.
Clint: Do you?
Nash: Hmm. Yes, I believe I do, sir.
[Nash and Clint sit at the table]
Nash: Mrs. Davidson thinks that if I can't have Tess, I'll have the
next best thing, but all I'm trying to do is make Tess more real to Jessica
so that maybe -- just maybe -- Tess will be the dominant personality and
we'll have a chance, just a shot at a future together.
Niki: There's something you kind of need to know about the little
old winemaker.
Tess: I'm not interested in anything that you have to say about
Nash.
[Niki tells Tess that Nash has fallen in love with Jessica]
Tess: Is that the best you got? Nash is in love with Jessica?
Niki: Mm-hmm.
Tess: That's the big news that's supposed to throw me for a loop?
Niki: That ain't news?
Tess: It's garbage, Niki. Nash doesn't even like Jessica. He
wouldn't even look at her if he didn't think that I was somewhere inside.
Niki: Well, see, I kind of figured you saw the way Jessica and Nash
are when they're together. But if you didn't see it, see, that means
that Jessie's getting the hang of shutting you down.
Tess: He made her eggs, okay? He's a nice guy and she was hungry!
He was feeding our baby!
Tess: You don't know a damn thing about me and Nash.
Niki: I know about alters. Alters don't get the guy.
Tess: Maybe you didn't.
Niki: Now, you tell something -- why the hell would Nash want to make
Jessica feel better? He should make Jessica feel miserable so she takes a
powder, like, permanent, right? See, I don't even blame you. He's
your first boyfriend, you know? You're used to chewing 'em up and spitting
'em out.
Tess: That was a long time ago.
Niki: Hey, I'm just telling you what I see, you know? Mr. Boyfriend
Nash is in love with Jessica.
Tess: Not possible.
Niki: You should've seen the look on his face when she was crying
in his arms.
Tess: She fell to pieces. What was he supposed to do, hand her a tissue
and keep on eating?
Niki: Hey, you don't want to believe me? That's cool, you can
just wait for him to dump you.
Tess: Jessica doesn't even like Nash.
Niki: We ain't talking about Jessica! We are talking about Nash
and how Nash feels. Look, kid, you got to face it -- you got one thing going
for you, ok, and that's your dynamite good looks. Problem is, Ms. Jessica.
She got that without even trying.
Tess: Well, Nash isn't with me because of the way I look.
Niki: Will you focus here? We're talking Jessica. You
know, Ms. Perfect? Ms. Crazy-Making Perfect, just like her mother?
And you -- you are serious high-maintenance. You've been making
that Nash jump through hoops since the day you met him.
Tess: You don't know anything about that.
Niki: I heard what he said to Viki. You stole his car, you kept
disappearing on him. He calls you infuriating.
Tess: Yeah, in a good way.
Niki: You know what? Infuriating? It cute for a couple
of months. Nobody marries infuriating.
Antonio: I mean, she's got you hanging out here while your -- your
vineyard goes to hell. You two are living in a fantasy world.
Nash: Tess is real. And our life together is as real as yours
and Jessica's.
Niki: Jessica's the kind of girl guys lose it over permanently.
Tess: Yeah, not Nash.
Nash: I don't care if it takes 10 years for me to get Tess back, it'll
never have been a waste of my life. Tess is my life. I would've
thought that you of all people would've understood that.
Antonio: I do. Only difference is Jessica's here. She's
not going anywhere.
Nash: I know you love Jessica, but I love Tess just as much. No,
wait, I love her more. Why? Because Tess is twice the woman that
Jessica ever will be.
Nash: Even Jessica admits that Tess is a very important part of her
personality.
Antonio: Yeah, she's one piece of Jessica's personality, a small
piece.
Nash: She's the best piece. She's a woman on fire, full of life
and conviction. Jessica's a watered-down version of her. I mean,
she's nice enough, but I live for Tess and I will never give up on her.
Niki: You know, your grape-stomper -- he is one fine-looking guy,
and he can have anybody he chooses.
Tess: He wants me.
Niki: He did want you, till he found out you're just a made-up person.
Come on, why the hell would he want to put up with all that drama when
the real thing is right there for the taking?
Tess: You're right.
Niki: Huh?
Tess: I said you're right. Nash does love Jessica. Who
wouldn't?
Niki: Well, I don't know about you, but I'm going to get out of this
town before Clint and them headshrinkers catch up to me and turn me back
into Viki.
Tess: I'll go with you.
[Nash tries to call Tess but she doesn't pick up]
Nash: Damn it, pick up. Oh, I hope wherever you are, you're
warm and safe and you know I'm waiting for you, Tess. I will wait for
you forever if I have to.
