[Clint and Nash first meet when Tess is brought to the hospital following
her showdown with Antonio at the airport]
Clint: What did you do to her?
Nash: (gesturing to Antonio) Ask him.
Clint: Viki and I know that you care about our daughter.
Nash: Sir, it's more than that.
Clint: We were never properly introduced. I'm Clint Buchanan,
and Jessica, or Tess, as you know her, is my daughter.
Nash: I'm Nash Brennan, Mr. Buchanan. Tess and I are -- well,
she's an amazing woman, sir. Just tell me if there's anything I can
do to help her be that again.
Clint: Whoever my daughter might be after she integrates, I have no
idea. Nobody does.
Nash: You're telling me I may lose her?
Nash: Mr. Buchanan, have you ever met Tess?
Clint: Besides tonight, no.
Nash: She's not usually like that, freaking out like she is. She's
incredible. I mean, she's infuriating at the same time. One minute
she's making me laugh, the next minute she just makes me want to tear my
hair out. Sir, I'm in love with her. I -- I don't know if I can
just let her go.
Nash: Yeah, but what about Tess?
Clint: Nash, you heard the doctor. The goal here is to merge
Jessica's two personalities into one.
Nash: I know that. Is she even going to remember me?
Clint: I wish there was something that we could do to make this easier
for you. But Jessica and her treatment -- that comes first.
Nash: I understand that. I do. But I just can't help feeling
that if Tess is going to be a part of Jessica, that just maybe the love that
we shared will become a part of Jessica, as well.
[Nash is looking at a picture of Jessica at Llanfair]
Nash: I know that smile. I used to love trying to come up with ways
to make Tess smile like that. How can at not be her smile?
Clint: It is hers, just as much as it is Jessica's.
Nash: Right, yeah -- everything you said at the hospital. I
know. It's hard to get my head around, you know. "Hey, the woman
who's going to be the love of your life -- she's only kind of real."
Nash: Would you find it hard if the best part of the woman you love
doesn't include you? It's --
Clint: Yeah, I would. But it is a possibility, so we have to
prepare for it.
Nash: Right. Thank you.
Clint: What for?
Nash: You have been honest with me. You've helped me understand
this. I appreciate that.
[Nash looks at family pictures at Llanfair]
Nash: Everyone looks so happy.
Clint: That's because this house is full of love. It still is.
Nash: After everything we've been through, I -- we never took any
pictures.
[Clint takes a picture of Jessica out of his wallet and gives it to
Nash]
Clint: Nash, I want you to have this. But before you take it,
I'm going to tell you something. I'm giving you this because it's obvious
how much you love my daughter and how much you miss her. But don't
take this gesture as any more than that.
Nash: I understand. Thank you. Sir, um -- you have been
nothing but honest and straightforward with me. I'd like to be honest
and straightforward with you. I will never maliciously take your daughter
away from you. But I'm not giving up either. Whatever happens
to her, whoever she ends up being, I'm not going to just walk away from the
woman I love and the child that may be mine. I'm just not like that.
I'm sorry.
Clint: I understand, son. Neither would I.
[Clint offers to pay Nash's fine at the police station]
Nash: That's very gracious of you, but I pay my own way.
Clint: Did I say that this was a gift? No, no, no, no, no, no.
This is a loan, and I expect you to pay it back, with interest -- as
soon as that winery starts turning a little profit. Young man, pocket
that check.
Nash: Thank you.
Clint: You're welcome. Now that we got that out of the way,
we can start discussing Jessica, and how you are going to keep your
distance.
Nash: You can't buy me off, Mr. Buchanan. I love Tess. I'm
not turning my back on her, not until I'm sure that there's no chance left
for us and that it's her choice. Keep your damn money, Mr. Buchanan.
Clint: Nash, I know that you're an honorable man. I also know
that if you hadn't taken care of my daughter, she'd probably still be lost.
Now, it was never my intention to run you out of town, and if you hadn't
cut out of the police station so fast, I would've made sure you knew that.
Now, the time is here where we both have to concentrate on helping
my daughter get better, and that means you and Antonio -- you have got to
give her some space.
Nash: I'll give her space, I'll give her time, I'll give her anything
she needs to get well, but you got to let me do what I came here to do. I
got to see her, Mr. Buchanan.
Clint: Didn't I just say that you got to give her some space?
Nash: I need to see her. Just see her, all right? Natalie
said that she's sleeping. I just want to see that she's ok.
Clint: All right.
Clint: Nash, you are welcome to come to Llanfair with us, but I don't
want any scenes, all right? I don't want any spitting contests with
Antonio over who's better for my daughter. Do you understand what I'm
saying?
Nash: Yeah, of course. The last thing I want to do is to make
things worse for her.
Clint: Well, good. I believe you and thank you very much.
Nash: Thank you for keeping me in the loop.
Clint: I need somebody to watch over Niki. (gestures toward
Viki's bedroom) She's in there.
Nash: You want me to watch her?
Clint: Well, I can't ask Antonio to look over both women, and if you
love my daughter as much as you say you do --
Nash: I do.
Clint: Well, then I trust you to take care of her mother, all right?
Nash: Yeah. Thank you.
Clint: You look like I feel. Need a drink as bad as I do?
Nash: Ah -- I am guessing that you didn't get anywhere with Mrs. Davidson
or -- what a family -- her other personality.
Clint: (about Niki) I will tell you one thing -- I am
not going to let her destroy Jessica.
Nash: With all due respect, I'm more worried about what happens to
my Tess.
[Jessica wants to let Tess out to talk to Niki]
Clint: Jessica, I know you want to help, and, believe me, I don't
like keeping Viki hostage in her own --
Jessica: Then let's try, Dad.
Clint: What if you end up in the same situation? No, Jessica,
no.
Nash: Not a lot of free will in this house, is there, sir?
Nash: So Cristian is Antonio's brother, right?
Clint: That's right, and Natalie's husband, and he disappeared some
time ago, and everybody believed that he was dead.
Nash: Now, why would anyone run away from here?
Clint: Nash, I know this has been hard for you, and I appreciate
everything that you've done.
Nash: I promised I wouldn't run away with Tess. I never
agreed to abandon her.
Nash: I saw you having lunch with that lady over there.
Clint: That was no lady, that was Dorian Lord.
Nash: I just wanted to see how Tess is doing.
Clint: As well as can be expected. How about you?
Nash: Fine, good, thanks.
Clint: Nash, people who are fine don't have bruises on their face and they're
not half in the bag in the middle of the day.
Nash: I had a glass of wine.
Clint: How many?
Nash: Three, four.
Nash: Tess is going to find out about me.
Clint: What do you mean?
Nash: Well, she's going to find out what kind of a guy I am -- you all are
-- and then it will be over.
Clint: Nash, Tess is my daughter just as much as Jessica is. I'm going to
see that nothing happens to her. So if you want to get near her anytime soon,
you better start talking.
Nash: There was another woman, before I met Tess. It was a few years ago,
and I hurt her. It wasn't my intention, but I hurt her.
Clint: Nash, what are you trying to say?
Nash: I took Claudia Reston's money because she wanted me to have it. It
was easy. So I took it.
Clint: And dangerous, apparently.
Nash: I deserved it. The problem is it didn't help Claudia. I hurt Claudia,
and nothing will ever be able to change that. Can I tell you something?
Clint: Go ahead.
Nash: I never really understood how much I hurt Claudia until I fell in love
with Tess.
Clint: Well, you're involved with my daughter now. And you've been very fair
so far, considering the circumstances. But if you hurt her, I will not be
quite so understanding as whoever did this to you.
Nash: Sir, I do not want to hurt her.
Clint: Okay.
Nash: I will do anything I can to help Tess get better. I mean that.
Clint: Well, at this point, we don't know what that is. Staying sober would
be a good start, though.
Nash: Gotcha.
Clint: Until we know who the father is, Nash is a major part of Tess' life
and Jessica's. As far as that other woman is concerned, we don't know all
the facts, plus it happened a long time ago.
Antonio: You're defending him?
Clint: (about Nash) I think he's a good kid.
Viki: I don't know how you can say that. My God, he stole that young girl's
money. He drove her to drug addiction.
Clint: Technically, he didn't steal anything, she gave it to him. Plus, he
was -- he was young. People change, Viki.
Viki: I don't know how you can defend him. I --
Clint: Well, I think I'm a good judge of character.
Clint: (to Viki) I have a perspective that you don't. I know what it's like
to love a woman who has another life and another love. So I'm totally sympathetic
to any man who looks at the woman of his dreams and realizes he may have
lost her forever.
Clint: This is obviously not the best-case scenario for our daughter, but
I'm telling you, Nash is a good man.
Viki: He may very well be that, but he's the wrong man for Jessica.
Clint: What about Tess?
Nash: You know, you know a lot more about this D.I.D. thing than I do. Is
it possible that -- that Tess believed everything that Claudia was saying
and then let Jessica come out just so she could get away from me?
Clint: Just because Jessica has come back, that does not mean that Tess has
given up on you.
Nash: Oh, but you didn't hear what Claudia had to say about me or see how
Tess reacted.
Clint: Yeah, I know that. I -- I know what you're going through, though.
You know, there are reasons why Viki's alters kept coming and going -- a
lot of reasons, and all of them complicated.
Nash: So -- so you think there's still a chance Tess might come back?
Clint: If you're asking me if this is over -- no, not even close.
Clint: Well, why don't you move in here?
Nash: You're inviting me to stay here?
Clint: Well, why not? You could do a whole lot worse.
Nash: I've been doing a whole lot worse. Nice place. But honestly, look,
I -- I wasn't fishing for an invite. I --
Clint: Yeah, I know that. And I also know what you're going through, and
if there's anything I can do to make it a little bit easier, I will.
Nash: It's a kind offer, sir, but I -- I really think -- Clint: Hey, look,
if this is a pride thing, get over it. We've got too much of that around
here as it is.
Nash: Well, then you don't need any more of it.
Clint: No. Son, you can't keep doing what you're doing. You need a little
help, ok? So why don't you get your things together, and I'll go check up
on Jessica.
Nash: Thank you, sir.
Viki: Clint, I think the problem here is that you are drawing lines in the
sand, okay? You did it the other day when Antonio came by to talk to us about
that woman, that Claudia Reston, and you did it again when you invite Nash
to move in. You are drawing battle lines.
Clint: Viki, I don't think so.
Viki: We have to present a united front for Jessica. You're playing favorites
with Nash. You know what that's going to do? Divide this family right in
two!
Nash: Jessica was upset about her uncle Todd's conviction. She broke down.
I comforted her. And Mrs. Davidson came in to find me with my arms around
Jessica.
Clint: And Viki jumped to conclusions?
Nash: She accused me of having ulterior motives.
Clint: Do you?
Nash: Hmm. Yes, I believe I do, sir.
[Nash and Clint sit at the table]
Nash: Mrs. Davidson thinks that if I can't have Tess, I'll have the next
best thing, but all I'm trying to do is make Tess more real to Jessica so
that maybe -- just maybe -- Tess will be the dominant personality and we'll
have a chance, just a shot at a future together. But Mrs. Davidson would
like me to let her go.
Clint: Well, she was wrong to say that.
Clint: (to Viki) I may not have D.I.D., but I've seen it from the other side.
I have lived with it for years, and I have a totally different perspective
of Jessica's condition than you do. And because I've lived with it for years,
I am somewhat sympathetic to other people going through the same thing like
Nash Brennan.
