[Antonio has tracked Tess/Jessica to the winery, and Nash is ready for
a showdown]
Nash: (about Tess) Just leave her the hell alone.
Antonio: I can't do that.
Nash: You can't do that? Pathetic, but honest.
Antonio: You don't understand.
Nash: I don't understand? I understand that I don't like you breaking
into my place, that I don't like you hunting after my girl.
Nash: And if you hurt her again --
Antonio: I hurt her?
Nash: Yeah, you hurt her. I'm in love with her. She's in love
with me. But if you lay one hand on her again --
Antonio: This Tess that you think you know --
Nash: That I do know. I mean, I know her name's really Jessica. I
know she's from Llanview, Pennsylvania. I know that she's trying to get away,
to start over -- if only certain people would let her.
Officer: Somebody call about a break-in?
Nash: Me. I caught him in the act.
Antonio: What?
Nash: He's all yours, officers.
Antonio: (to the police officers) Well, you can't hold me without
formal charges, and since there aren't any --
Nash: (smiling) Oh, but there are.
Jessica: You met Nash?
Antonio: Oh, yeah. Yeah, he tried to have me arrested. He's a perfect
match for Tess, a real prince.
[Nash arrives at Antonio's loft]
Antonio: Get out.
Nash: Not without my Tess.
[Jessica wants a minute alone with Antonio]
Nash: I don't like it. I -- all right, fine. I'll go out that door,
but just two steps. And if I hear so much as a whimper from you, I'll bust
the damn thing down, all right? Okay? All right.
[Nash comes back into the loft after Antonio and Jessica have finished
talking]
Nash: You two got this all worked out? That's great. We'll get out
of your hair now, Antonio.
Antonio: I know how you feel.
Nash: Yeah, right.
Nash: What in the hell is going on?
Antonio: Will you shut up?
Nash: No, just stop. She's told me what you're really like and I wouldn't
believe a word you say anyway.
Nash: As soon as Tess is feeling better, I'm getting her out of here.
Don't try and stop me.
Antonio: What are you going to do, Nash? You going to call the cops
like you did in Napa? I guarantee it won't work.
Nash: Is that what you used to tell her when you were slapping her
around, huh?
Antonio: If she told you I did things like that, it's because she's
not well.
Nash: "Not well." She is the strongest, healthiest person I know.
All she needed was to get away from you.
Nash: Oh, you are really scraping the bottom here, aren't you? I mean,
come on, the poor woman. First you scare her out of town, you stalk her all
the way across the country, drag her back, and you're saying she's the one
who's sick?
Antonio: Tess isn't the woman who you think she is.
Nash: No, she's the woman I love --
Antonio: Damn it.
Nash: For who she is and who she wants to be. And now that I'm standing
eye to eye with the reason she was running -- you know what, I'm going to
keep on loving her.
Antonio: Jessica and I have been together for five years. We're engaged.
We're raising a child together. And you think that after, what, a month you
know her better than I do?
Nash: I know that you're the one she was running from.
Antonio: Her name --
Nash: I know, I heard you the first thousand times.
Nash: Come on, Antonio, this is about what you want. You want your
woman back.
Antonio: Jessica isn't anyone's woman.
Nash: Yeah, and neither is Tess.
Antonio: Look, I don't owe you any explanations.
Nash: Good.
Nash: When are you going to get it? You're not calling the shots anymore.
Tess doesn't answer to you.
Antonio: No, but Jessica will.
Clint: What did you do to her?
Nash: (gesturing to Antonio) Ask him.
Nash: Oh, great.
Antonio: You were asked to leave.
Nash: Yeah, well, so were you, but, hey, you're still here.
Antonio: You know, if you were thinking at all, she wouldn't be tied
to a hospital bed right now.
Nash: If you hadn't come along, she'd be enjoying her life, not tied
to a hospital bed having drugs stuffed down her throat so that you and her
family can hold on to something that she obviously doesn't want!
Antonio: She is mentally ill. I can't believe that you would even
think about taking someone who is so obviously sick away from her family,
her doctors, her support system!
Nash: Her support system? That's some support system. "Hey, Tess,
be exactly what we tell you to be. Fit into some perfect little cookie cutter
of what the girlfriend/daughter ought to be and don't even try to rock the
boat!"
Antonio: Oh, jeez, we're trying to help her!
Nash: Help? How did keeping me in the dark help anybody? You had all
that information back at the loft, but you didn't deem me worthy to know
that, did you? Same way you don't deem Tess to be a human!
Antonio: Because she's not, Jess is!
Nash: She is. She's real. She's very real. She's the most real person
I know. She's real enough to fall in love. She's real enough to have a baby.
She was real enough to want to get away from you so badly that she climbed
out of your window.
Nash: I'm getting Tess out of there.
Antonio: You're not taking Jessica anywhere.
Nash: Tess! Her name is Tess. I'm getting her out of there, and there's
nothing that you or her family can do to stop me.
Antonio: You do that, I'll kill you.
Nash: You know, I got an idea. Before you kill me, why don't we go
ask Tess what she wants.
Antonio: Her name is Jessica.
Nash: Jessica -- that's right. I know to you, she's Jessica.
Antonio: Oh, right, and now you admit she's real?
Nash: Oh, I know she's real. I'm just not so sure that you know that
Tess is real.
Antonio: You've seen for yourself now. She's got a family, friends,
a home, people who want to take care of her. So why don't you go back to
California where you belong.
Nash: Because I belong with Tess. I love her. And she has a family
here, too, especially if she's having my baby. I'm not going anywhere,
Antonio.
Antonio: Let's not get ahead of ourselves talking about Jessica's
baby.
Nash: Or Tess'.
Antonio: What we need to do is make sure she gets well.
Nash: "Integrated." The word is "integrated." See, I just spent the
last couple hours giving myself a little crash course on D.I.D. on the Internet.
Apparently, once a person is integrated, they have traits of both the host
and the alters. So once Jessica is well, she's going to be fully aware of
Tess and everything that Tess did. So she may well choose to be with me.
Antonio: You did the research. She doesn't know what she wants. Look,
she's not a whole person --
Nash: "A whole person." Yeah, I know, I've heard it over and over
and over again, but it's crap, all right? "She's not whole. She's not integrated.
We can't bring life to half a person. We got to help her be a whole person."
But it's crap, all right? None of this has anything to do with what's going
on in the inside, what really matters here.
Antonio: Right, you're the one who figured that out, too -- "what
really matters." You're the only who's got a handle on it.
Nash: I love her. All I know is I love the girl that's behind that
door with all my heart and she loves me. You heard her, didn't you? You heard
her. She loves me.
Tess: What the hell is going on? You know what -- Nash! Nash,
please!
Antonio: The girl that's in there is Jessica, and the girl that's
going to walk out of there is Jessica. Why can't you get it through your
thick skull and head back to California where you belong?
Nash: You know, I'm starting to understand why Jessica needed Tess
to get away from you. You don't listen.
Nash: There's no way of knowing who's going to walk out of there.
Antonio: It'll be Jessica.
Nash: Why? Because Jessica's so tough? You know, from what I've seen,
Tess is the survivor.
Antonio: Seems to me like you're making yourself pretty comfortable
here in Llanview.
Nash: Yeah, I got a room with a bath. It has a TV, a phone, a microwave
oven. Anything else you'd like to know?
Antonio: How long are you planning on staying?
Nash: As long as it takes.
Antonio: For what?
Nash: For this Tess/Jessica thing to get straightened out.
Antonio: Oh, I see. You're wasting your time.
Nash: You keep saying that.
Antonio: You know, I would leave, Brennan, because once this thing
does get worked out, then Jess will go back to being herself.
Nash: You know, assuming that this integration thing even happens,
Jessica will never be her old self. Tess is going to be a part of her, and
that Tess part will still be in love with me. And there's nothing that you
or anybody else can do about that, so there's no chance that I'm going to
leave her, no matter who the father of her child is.
Antonio: Jess and I have been together now for years.
Nash: Till she ran away from you.
Nash: See, I don't see it that way, her getting sick. I think she
was repressing something.
Antonio: Of course not. This is --
Nash: Something that she wasn't comfortable showing anybody, not even
you, but she was comfortable showing me. You know why? Because I understand
her.
Antonio: You do, huh?
Nash: Yeah, I do, and I accept her for what she is, not what I'd like
her to be. She's a free spirit, all right? She's a beautiful, fun, gorgeous
girl who loves with all of her heart but needs her freedom, too. I mean,
nobody is going to tell Tess how to lead her life, what to think, or who
to fall in love with, not even me. She's like me.
Antonio: What a bunch of crap.
Nash: We're very similar. Oh, but our connection wasn't just mental.
It was physical -- the desire, the passion.
Antonio: Don't you ever shut up?
Nash: It just was so intense, day-in, day-out, more than either of
us had ever experienced. I'm telling you, I had never had that --
[Antonio ends the conversation by punching Nash out]
Man: Fighting is against club rules.
Nash: Well, it's a silly rule.
Antonio: This isn't over, Brennan.
Nash: Mm-hmm.
Antonio: I'm not letting you anywhere near Jessica.
Nash: Yeah, we'll see what Tess says about that.
Antonio: What the hell's the matter with you? You can't -- you can't
just come up here and barge into Jessica's -- you know what, you're a guest
in this house. I know it's tough, but act like one. Don't you see? Don't
you see what this is doing to this family?
Nash: I see a hell of a lot more than that, hotshot. Tess and Niki
are screaming for help. They're struggling for their very survival, and all
you can do is lock them up in their bedroom and treat them like they got
some kind of a plague. If you're not careful, you're going to destroy both
of them.
Antonio: You've got nothing to stick around for.
Nash: Really? I think I do, because it's not about me, it's not about
Tess and me. There's a baby, a baby who may well be mine.
Antonio: He's not.
Nash: You two were together, what, once? See, Tess and I were together
a lot. You might say that we were having sex all the time. Good night.
Nash: Antonio and I will never be friends, let's put it that way.
Nash: It's not going to work.
Antonio: I'm not exactly sure what you mean.
Nash: Baiting me. It's not going to work. All right, I'm upset, I'm
frustrated, yeah, I'm angry. But I'm supposed to pop you one just on time
for Jessica and her father to come through here and figure out what kind
of an animal I really am, right? It's not going to work.
Antonio: You know, I'm only out here because of Jessica, because I
told her I would be a little more open to her situation.
Nash: No kidding?
Antonio: You know, I'd like to think I'm a straightforward kind of
guy.
Nash: Mm-hmm.
Antonio: When I find out that a guy runs off with the woman I love,
I don't like the guy. But then I find out that she has D.I.D. and he knows
nothing about it, I try to do the standup thing.
Nash: And the standup thing in this case just results in me 3,000
miles away?
Antonio: Look, I'm offering you some money to help you get your business
back on your feet. Take it or leave it.
Nash: You know what? I think I'll leave it. Mm-hmm. But I'll tell
you what. I may well have to go to California today to take care of this
business, because it's the most important thing to me, to Tess. It's what
we got together. It's our future. But as soon as that's done, I'm coming
back to get her.
Antonio: We scheduled a paternity test.
Nash: A paternity test? That's great, let's get a nurse in here. I'll
give a blood sample.
Antonio: I'm the father. I'll give the sample.
Nash: Well, it'll rule it out either way, won't it?
Antonio: Jess and I already discussed it. We're going to raise this
baby together.
Nash: Whoa. The hell you will. If that baby is mine, I got more of
a right to it than you or Jessica, I'm sorry.
Nash: I don't know what you're talking about. No one tried to kill
me.
Antonio: No, of course they didn't. Your face must have assaulted
somebody's fist, is that it?
Nash: I walked into a door.
Jessica: Antonio's right outside.
Nash: I'm in a wheelchair. What's he afraid of? God, why is he always
pushing so hard? If he thinks he's going to dig up some deep, dark secret
about me, he's going to be disappointed.
Jessica: I can't believe that you want to bring the law into this.
Antonio just got -- he just got through with one custody battle. How can
I put him through another one?
Nash: Well, Antonio should be worrying about his child. I am going
to worry about mine.
Nash: Look, I just came hear to warn you --
Antonio: Now you're warning me? I'll tell you what. If I can't get
the law to keep you away from jessica, I'll keep you away myself. Now you've
been warned.
Nash: That's how it is?
Antonio: That's how it is.
Nash: Well, you do what you got to do, and I guess I'll do what I
have to do.
Nash: (to Tess about Antonio) I'm here now, so if he wants
Jessica back, he's going to have to fight his way through me, all right?
[Antonio knocks on the door of Tess and Nash's room at the Bayberry
Inn]
Antonio: I know you guys are in there, so why don't you just make
it easy on all of us and open the door?
Tess: What are we going to do?
Nash: (with resignation) What we always do. We're going to
let him in.
Antonio: You need some help with your background questions? Because
I -- I know all about your background. And when I tell Tess, hopefully, she'll
come to her senses and want nothing to do with you.
Nash: Must feel pretty proud to be able to dig up dirt on whoever
you want, huh?
Antonio: You know, I'd like to think of myself as a pretty fair guy.
So why don't -- why don't you tell me your side of the story and we can clear
up any misunderstandings.
Nash: Why would I defend myself to you? See, I know a little bit about
your past, too.
Antonio: You know once we get the paternity test, you'll be out of
here. And out of Jessica's life.
Nash: I'm not in Jessica's life. I never have been.
Nash: I thought that I could get what I wanted with Claudia's money.
She spent it like it didn't mean anything to her. I didn't think that it
would mean anything to her to give it to me.
Antonio: That justifies what you did?
Nash: It doesn't justify anything. I'm trying to explain it. I was
young. I was too stupid. I wasn't thinking about Claudia. I was thinking
about myself and what I could get out of it.
Tess: That doesn't change what you did.
Antonio: Or what you did to that girl, so why don't you tell Tess
that?
Nash: I'm trying to, thank you!
Antonio: You know, I think -- I think we know everything we need to
know about your relationship with Claudia Reston.
Nash: I'm sure you do, Antonio, but Tess would like to hear more.
You heard her.
Nash: I would never hurt Tess the way I did Claudia Reston. I was
different then. I thought you'd understand that, considering your history.
Weren't you a gang leader?
Antonio: My past doesn't matter.
Nash: Hmm.
Antonio: I'm not going to let this drop.
Nash: No, I didn't think you would. Not your style.
Antonio: You know, it doesn't matter what the test results are. Jessica
and I have decided to raise that baby as our own.
Nash: Oh. Well, that may not be up to you. You want to make this more
interesting?
Antonio: How so?
Nash: Winner takes all -- the baby, the girl -- and the loser takes
a long, lonely hike home.
Antonio: You'd really use a game of pool to decide who gets Jessica
and the baby?
Nash: No, of course I wouldn't. But I'm just trying to show you how
absurd this is. We're fighting over this like somehow it's up to us, but
at the end of the day it's not. It's up to Tess.
Antonio: Except there's only one problem.
Nash: Hmm?
Antonio: At the end of all this, there will no longer be any Tess.
Nash: Wishful thinking. Doesn't make it so. You see, Tess is a lot
stronger than you think.
Nash: (about Tess) She's not upstairs, the staff hasn't seen
her.
Antonio: Well, how is that possible? Security said she never left.
Nash: Yeah, well, getting out of impossible situations is Tess'
specialty.
Nash: All righty. What is this new observation you have about Tess?
Antonio: The way I see it --
Nash: Ooh, this ought to be good.
Antonio: Jessica understands her actions have consequences. She's
an adult.
Nash: Yes, you're right, she's boring.
